Published February 6th, 2007
Sale records for six artists were broken at auction in London on Monday which raised 95 million pounds ($187 million) in what Sotheby’s auction house said was the highest total for a sale of impressionist and modern art in Europe.
The highlight was the record 8.75 million pounds paid for Chaim Soutine’s 1921 “L’Homme au Foulard Rouge”, well above its estimate of 3.5 to 5 million pounds. Just 10 years ago the same picture was bought for 1.5 million pounds.
