LS Lowry painting sets auction record

A picture by English artist LS Lowry of an Easter fair seen against a 20th century industrial landscape set a new auction record for the painter on Friday when it sold for 3.8 million pounds.

“Good Friday, Daisy Nook”, last seen at auction in 1970 when it set a then record price of 16,800 pounds for the artist renowned for his stick people and bleak backdrops, was sold to London dealer Richard Green.

“It is a really lovely picture, so colourful and animated and it has a wonderful story to go with it too,” a spokesman for auction house Christie’s told Reuters.

Painted in 1946, the picture shows the Lancashire mill town of Daisy Nook in festival mood the year after the end of World War Two.
