Sothebys holds London auction of Arab art

Sotheby’s inaugural sale of modern and contemporary Arab and Iranian art in London raked in a total $3.14 million on Wednesday, including buyers’ premiums. The auction house offered 186 lots and all but 10 found buyers. Among the highest selling works were Iranian artist Mohammad Ehsai’s “Oo Bakhshandeh Ast,” a gorgeous painting with interlocking red script against a black ground, which sold for $217,218; Iranian sculptor Parviz Tanavoli’s “Heech,” a sculpture of three linked letters in polished bronze, which sold for $177,910; and the late Egyptian sculptor Mahmoud Moukhtar’s “Au Bord du Nil (On the Banks of the Nile),” a striking bronze of a standing, semi-nude woman, which sold for $128, 775.
