Lost Turner watercolour for London auction – Dec 5

Published November 3rd, 2007

JMW Turner’s Bamborough Castle, a watercolour not seen in public since 1889, went on show at Sotheby’s in New York yesterday, ahead of its sale on December 5 in London.
Considered Britain’s greatest watercolourist, Turner painted Bamburgh Castle, 20 miles south of Berwick-upon-Tweed, on the edge of the North Sea, in the mid-1830s. His work was titled Bamborough Castle.

In 1890, the painting passed into the hands of the Vanderbilt family, where it remained for several generations, becoming effectively lost to much of the art world.

The work is considered one of the finest watercolour drawings in the world, according to the auction house, and is expected to fetch between £1.5 million to £2.5 million.
