Lowry cigarette packet sketch auctioned in London

A tiny sketch drawn on the back of a cigarette packet has fetched £5,280 in an auction.
The drawing was done by artist LS Lowry, famed for his pictures of matchstick men and Salford’s smoky views, for a friend in the 1930s.
The pencil sketch, on the inside of a packet of Woodbines, was up for sale in Nantwich, Cheshire, on Tuesday.
Lowry, who was not believed to have smoked, gave the drawing to his friend Arthur Delaney in Manchester.
Stephen Sparrow, from Peter Wilson Auctioneers, said: “It’s the kind of quirky thing that any collector would love to own and there was a great deal of interest.”
He said of the painting: “It’s incredible, for the size of the thing.
“It’s only a couple of inches each way but he’s somehow fitted in a little football ground in the foreground and an industrial scene landscape in the background. It’s a wealth of imagery.
“He often did sketches on anything he could find, be it a menu or whatever. These artists never stopped doodling so they would use anything.”
