A watercolor by J.M.W. Turner thought to have been lost, and not seen in public for almost 120 years, has been bought at auction by a U.S. collector for nearly 3 million pounds.

The painting, called Bamborough Castle, depicts a picturesque stretch of the northeastern English coast and was last publicly exhibited in 1889.

It comfortably exceeded its estimate of between £1.5 and £2 million at the auction last night.

Henry Wemyss, Head of British watercolours at Sotheby`s, said ahead of the auction: “This watercolour fully demonstrates the genius of Turner and it`s a real treat to have the privilege of bringing it to sale.”

“Its recent re-discovery after more than a century away from the public eye, alongside its dramatic and powerful British subject, result in an incredibly rare and special work of art.”
