Published December 13th, 2007
Maria Callas’s love letters to Giovanni Battista Meneghini, her former husband and mentor, failed to sell at a Milan auction today.
Sotheby’s had valued the opera singer’s 63 letters at as much as 70,000 euros ($102,739). The bidding didn’t get above 38,000 euros, said the auction house’s spokesman Matthew Weigman in a telephone interview. They were the only unsold lot of the sale, which is still going on, he said.
