Bulgaria to Auction WWII Nazi Tanks

Published March 20th, 2008

In Bulgaria, the Ministry of Defense is preparing to auction off a piece of European military history, which has been lying forgotten and half-buried in the ground for decades.

Collectors of vintage military vehicles are already lining up to bid on some of the more than 40 Nazi German tanks, which were once used to protect Bulgaria’s southern border during the Cold War.

A bid of $22,000 was received for one Soviet gun turret. Bulgaria had intentionally half-buried some of the Soviet tanks on its border with Turkey as a defense against NATO attack during the cold war. Most of the country’s tanks were smelted down, with 2,500 Soviet-era models destroyed in 2006 and 2007.

One of the German tanks, a rare Jagdpanzer IV tank destroyer, was stolen last year, two Germans and a Bulgarian army officer have been arrested for the theft.
