On Thursday, February 5th, 2009, the Künker Auction House will be holding an auction of high-value historical coins and medals in Berlin’s Estrel Convention Center.

The 38th World Money Fair, which is the world’s largest coin exhibition, begins a day later in the same location (February 6th to 8th, 2009).

Up for auction are approximately 1,522 lots with an estimated overall value of nearly three million Euros. Articles on offer include a host of numismatic treasures, some of which are exceptionally rare. Many of the lots date from the Russian Tsardom (estimated value: approximately 1.3 million Euros), while others originate from mediaeval and modern European gold and silver mints (estimated value: 1.2 million Euros). An extensive range of Austrian and German mining coins and medals will also be auctioned in single lots (estimated value: approximately 233,000 Euros) as well as Silesian coins (estimated value: 138,000 Euros).

Highlights

The highlights include an exceedingly rare, gold 50 ducat Polish coin dating from 1658, which will have a starting price of 100,000 Euros. The obverse side of this coin displays the likeness of the Polish king Johann Kasimir, while the reverse side depicts the liberation of the Polish city of Torun on the River Vistula from the occupying Swedish army.
